The solo show Something/Nothing (Spiral Arm Gallery Canberra 1992) was about the dichotomies that characterise Western civilisation (such as man/woman, mind/body, time/space, right/left, us/them, culture/nature) formed the theme. I attempted to both illustrate these dichotomies by making words like “soft” out of messy eucalypt branches but “hard” out of square wooden blocks balanced as a tower, and to break down the dichotomies by making large left/right hand drawings on canvas as whole-body physical gestures. The large drawings, done with no premeditation and in a non-judgemental way, were strange and unexpected: like energy fields or mythic creatures.

Materials: canvas, various drawing media, wood, branches, wire, pins.
