The Convict and the Jew was a collaboration with Sue Pedley (The Canberra Contemporary Art Space Gorman House Canberra, 24Hr Art Darwin, 2000). The artists delved into familial ancestry of convict settlers in Tasmania, Ukrainian Jews and Spaniards mining in South America – an archive of diaspora, presented as traces and relics floating in a sea of amnesia. A sound recording of the scrunches and cutting in the making processes formed a background in the Gallery. Large printed and batiked paper lanterns hung from the ceiling, a giant back-lit family tree in the background; another room was massed with traceries of connection and disintegration.

Materials: rice paper, Perspex, plywood, papers, twine and thread, mica, ashes, fluoros.
